Frequently Asked Questions
What types of stories are you looking for?
Any story that falls within the umbrella of "speculative fiction" will be reviewed.
Do I need an agent to submit my work to Apis Books?
No, absolutely not! If you have a literary agent, great, but we do not prioritize queries from authors represented by agents. Apis Books aims to make every publication process unique and tailored to the work and the author and will work closely with the author, agent or not.
Can I submit an outline or an unfinished work?
At this time, we are only looking for completed drafts of an author's work. While we only ask for a short sample of the work, we will not agree to publish a work without first reading the manuscript in its entirety. Please take the time to write the novel you want and submit to Apis Books when you have a finished draft you are proud of.
When will I know if my submission has been accepted?
We will contact you first to let you know that your submission has been received. Within eight weeks, you will know if Apis Books is interested in reading your work in its entirety. After that, it could be up to twelve weeks or longer until you receive an acceptance or rejection notification.
Do you accept previously self-published works?
Yes, we accept submissions of previously self-published works. Follow our submission guidelines, which can be found here.
How long will it take to publish a book?
The entire time can vary, especially depending on the editing process, but Apis Books aims to have the work published within a year of acquiring it.
What makes Apis Books a "green publisher?"
There are many things that Apis Books does to be environmentally friendly and conscientious. The biggest thing is reducing paper use by printing business materials sparingly, having all correspondence done electronically, marketing online, keeping the publishing process as paper-free as possible, and publishing ebooks instead of printed copies. For any print editions of books, care will be taken to keep that process environmentally-friendly as well.
Does Apis Books only publish ebooks?
Each publication will begin as an ebook, however Apis Books does plan to publish print editions of some works. When or whether or not a work will be sold in print book form depends on a variety of factors and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
What is expected of authors published by Apis Books?
We believe that the success of a book depends on the partnership between the publisher and author. Among other things, authors published by Apis Books should expect requests to be a guest writer or interviewee on the Apis Books Blog, to promote their work on their social media networks, to attend book signings and marketing events, and to help generate ideas on how to best sell their work.
